The sea forwarder's Dictionary
MBL and HBL
MBL (Master Bill of Lading) is a document issued by the shipowner (sea carrier) or its Agent. It contains the details of the Sender, Consignee and cargo details. The bill of lading serves as proof of the conclusion of the transport contract.
HBL (House Bill of Lading) is a document issued by NVOCC (Non Vessel Operation Common Carrier) - a logistics operator company. It also specifies the details of the Sender, Consignee and cargo details.
Both MBL and HBL serve as proof of concluding a transport contract, therefore it is worth remembering that if the original bills of lading are lost, the shipowner/forwarder will suspend the release of the goods or container until the originals are delivered.
SWB or TLRX
SeaWayBill - SWB (Express Bill of Lading) for short. This is a bill of lading that appears in an electronic version (not printed). It is used when the Shipper has full confidence in the Consignee or all payments for the goods have been settled before their shipment, in this situation a SeaWayBill or Express Bill of Lading can be issued.
Telex Release - instead of sending the original bills of lading to the Consignee, the Shipper returns the set of originals to the shipowner/forwarder, who on this basis issues a Telex Release instruction, which means that the container or goods can be released to the Consignee at the destination.
Loss of bill of lading
The sea bill of lading is issued in several numbered copies, there are 3 originals, signed with the words ORIGINAL and numbered successively 1/3, 2/3/ and 3/3 together with the word COPY signed with any number of copies. A maritime bill of lading is a security and in the event of its loss, the shipowner or freight forwarder will withhold the release of the container or goods until the delivery of the original bills of lading. In the event of a shortage of original bills of lading, the shipowner will require the submission of security or a long-term bank guarantee in order to release the container or goods to the Consignee without presenting the originals of the bill of lading.
Demurrage and Detention
In maritime transport, the Shipowner has provided a period of free time from fees for demurrage and detention. During this time, the carrier does not charge any additional fees for the use of the container, thus giving the Consignee time to organize transport, unload the goods and return the empty container to the place designated by the Shipowner.
Demurrage is charged when the Consignee fails to pick up the container from the port within a specified, free of charge period.
Detention is charged when the recipient has collected the container but has not yet returned it to the place indicated by the shipowner within the specified time free of charge.
